Movers Earls Court Health and Safety Policy
Movers Earls Court is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, subcontractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with packing, loading, transporting and unloading household and commercial goods.
We recognise that professional moving work can involve manual handling, vehicle operations, use of equipment and working in a variety of properties and locations. We therefore take proactive steps to identify hazards, assess risks and implement effective control measures to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management of Movers Earls Court. Management will ensure that appropriate resources, information, instruction and supervision are provided so that this policy can be implemented and maintained.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day to day safety management on jobs, including briefing crews, checking equipment and vehicles, and ensuring that safe systems of work are followed at all times.
Every employee and subcontractor must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions. All staff are required to follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards or incidents promptly and co operate with the company in fulfilling its legal and moral duties.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Movers Earls Court carries out risk assessments for the typical activities involved in our moving services. These include but are not limited to manual handling of furniture and boxes, use of lifting aids and trolleys, vehicle loading and unloading, property access risks, and driving for work.
Where we encounter unusual or higher risk environments, such as restricted access, high value or fragile items, or shared spaces with other contractors, additional job specific assessments are carried out. Control measures may include revised methods of work, additional manpower, specialist equipment or adjusted timings to reduce risk.
Safe working procedures are communicated to staff through inductions, briefings and on the job supervision. These procedures cover safe lifting techniques, correct use of equipment, securing loads in vehicles, and careful handling of items to prevent personal injury and property damage.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a key element of our work, and we aim to eliminate or reduce risky lifting wherever reasonably practicable. We plan moves so that heavy or awkward items are handled by sufficient team members and, where needed, supported by mechanical aids.
All staff are trained in safe lifting and carrying techniques, including how to assess the weight and stability of items, how to use team lifting effectively and how to avoid twisting or over reaching. We encourage staff to speak up if they believe an item is too heavy or unsafe to move without assistance or equipment.
Equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps, blankets and other protective materials is provided and maintained in good condition. Staff must inspect equipment before use and report any defects immediately so that unsafe equipment is taken out of service.
Vehicles, Driving and Load Security
Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard and are regularly inspected to ensure that they are roadworthy and safe to operate. Only authorised and competent drivers are allowed to drive company vehicles or vehicles used on our behalf.
Drivers and crew are responsible for loading vehicles in a way that distributes weight safely and prevents movement of goods during transit. Loads must be properly secured using straps and other restraints. Overloading is strictly prohibited.
Drivers must comply with road traffic laws, company rules on driving hours and rest breaks, and any specific instructions for particular routes or delivery addresses. Mobile phones and other distractions must not be used while driving.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
Many of our activities take place in and around customer homes, offices and shared areas. We take care to plan and carry out work in a way that minimises disruption and risk to customers, neighbours and other members of the public.
Our teams will maintain clear walkways where possible, manage trip hazards such as packing materials and equipment, and take care when moving items through doorways, stairwells and communal areas. When necessary we will use signs or verbal warnings to alert others to moving activity.
We respect customers property and take reasonable measures to prevent damage to floors, walls and fixtures while protecting the health and safety of everyone present.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Earls Court provides suitable induction and ongoing training for all staff, tailored to their roles and responsibilities. This may include manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, hazard awareness and emergency procedures.
Instructions are given in a clear and practical way so that staff understand not only what to do, but why specific safety measures are important. Supervisors provide regular on site guidance and check that safe methods of work are being followed.
Accident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, near misses, incidents and identified hazards must be reported as soon as possible to management. We keep records of such events and investigate them to identify root causes and take corrective action.
Lessons learned from incidents are shared with staff and, where needed, lead to changes in procedures, training, equipment or risk assessments. We are committed to continuous improvement in our health and safety performance.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the physical nature of removals work and the importance of staff welfare. Employees are encouraged to maintain good physical fitness, use correct techniques and take breaks as needed to avoid fatigue. No one should undertake tasks for which they are not physically capable.
Staff must not work under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their judgement, coordination or ability to work safely. Any health condition that could affect safe working must be discussed confidentially with management so that appropriate adjustments can be considered.
Policy Review and Communication
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or best practice. Updated versions are communicated to all staff and are available for customers to read on request.
By working together and following the principles in this policy, Movers Earls Court aims to provide safe, reliable and professional moving services while protecting the wellbeing of our teams, our customers and the wider community.
